Mpilo Hospital set to receive 1,000 blankets

Bulawayo's Mpilo Hospital is set to receive 1,000 blankets by this Christmas, thanks to a global social media campaign spearheaded by Canadian-based and Zimbabwean-born nurse.
The blankets destined for the hospital's maternity wards are a response to the deplorable state of health facilities across many of Zimbabwe's rural and urban locations.
Blanket Collection for Mpilo Hospital Facebook group page went public on the 12th of July 2013. More than 200 blankets have so far been purchased from a supplier in South Africa. In addition, several bags of gently used baby clothing have been donated.
"I am moved by the generosity of my fellow Zimbabweans. I know many people outside of Zimbawe are going through difficult economic times, yet, they are giving sacrificially every week," said Sakhile Sibanda, founder of Blankets for Mpilo Facebook page.
Sibanda, who trained as a nurse in Ontario, Canada was challenged by a comment made by one of her university instructors. Relating the story she said, "The drive was inspired by a research paper I the founder of the group wrote for my MPH assignment on public health programs that contribute to continuing health inequalities and inequities in low income countries, this paper was based on the Zimbabwean health care system. My instructor Dr. Walter responded with the following comment to the assignment "The statistics you provided were very disheartening to read, but they demonstrate the continued health inequities in low income countries. If a hospital cannot afford to have blankets for their patients, a mobile mammography unit would be extremely far fetched".
