IN a shocking incident, a Dora man was on Sunday arrested for allegedly raping two women – aged 26 and 18 – in full view of one of the victims' husband.
Manica Post reported that the culprit, Lameck Ndonde (28) of Gondo Village in Chief Zimunya's area is assisting police with investigations and is set to appear in court soon. The incident which happened in Nyakunu Village last Sunday around 11am, baffled villagers who are now living in fear following a litany of rape cases being recorded in the area in recent weeks.
Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda, said Ndonde followed one of the victims from Maguru Business Centre to her uncle's homestead.
The two raped complainants are related as aunt and niece.
"Upon arrival, he raped the first complainant who was sleeping in another room. He later entered into another bedroom where the first victim's uncle and his wife were sleeping in. The couple stormed outside, but Ndonde managed to catch the second complainant and raped her," said Asst Insp Chananda.
He added: "He assaulted her with a log and a brick. She fell down and raped her once. The second victim's husband who had gone out to mobilise neighbours and other villagers came back and effected a citizen's arrest. He was handed over to the police."
When The Weekender visited Dora area which is in the peri-urban of Mutare on Monday morning, perplexed villagers, said rapists and armed robbers were now a menace.
"Crimes like these are happening everyday. We are now living in fear. Some of these criminals are well known, but they are not being arrested. The Neighbourhood Watch Committee has been doing its best by conducting patrols during the night, but their efforts are not enough. We hope the police will help us to fight these crimes," said one villager.
Said Tapiwa Mugasho: "This is becoming a cause of concern. Our children are no longer safe because of these serial rapists and criminals. We urge police to frequent these places regularly and conscientise people about these criminals and their modus operandi."
Peter Gandahwa also said: "Most of these (criminals) are unemployed youths who abuse drugs and spent the whole day wandering around the village. They need to be tamed," he said.
In an unrelated incident, a 20-year-old Buhera man , Karakadzai Mangunduru was last weekend arrested after luring a 10-year-old girl (name withheld) with sugarcane before sexually abusing her several times.
The incident happened in Chief Nyashanu's area.
