AN elderly man (50) from Umguza is at loggerheads with the law after his girlfriend, aged 13, eloped to become his second wife.
The villagers and the girl's family took it upon themselves to fight for the girl who seemed head over heels in love with the old man.
They reported the matter to the police resulting in his arrest.
The incident left tongues wagging in the village as they reportedly had a torrid time in forcing the girl to return to her home.
The man was charged with indulging in sex with a young person when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Lungile Ncube.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in-custody to 19 July.
The court heard that sometime in April this year, the old man who stays in the same village with the girl in the Klipspring area, proposed love to her.
She accepted the proposal resulting in the two becoming lovebirds who without wasting time started engaging in protected sex.
The old man at times sneaked into the girl's place or vice-versa until the time when the madly in love girl decided to move to his place.
She ran away from home and her worried parents and villagers conducted a search where they discovered her newly found home.
Upon asking her what she was doing at the man's place, she then revealed they were in love and wanted to be his wife leading to the matter being reported to the police.
The girl was referred to hospital for a medical check-up while he was arrested for indulging in sex with a young person in the extra-marital affair.
