KwaMereki gets facelift

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority says it has started working together with stakeholders at Mereki Business Centre in Harare's Warren Park suburb to bring sanity and upgrade standards at the open eating place that has seen the growth and promotion of township tourism.
ZTA Chief Operating Officer Givemore Chidzidzi said efforts are being made to ensure that KwaMereki becomes a proper township tourism place where locals and tourists can experience the country's cultural and social diversity.
Chidzidzi however bemoaned the continued deterioration of public infrastructure and community centres in most of the high residential areas saying they are no longer saving the purpose for which they were initially intended for.
He urged the city fathers to revive community halls and take seriously their mandate to provide recreational facilities and places where people can socialise such as recreational parks.
Township tourism is a strategic initiative that has the potential to contribute towards the development of local communities through collection of revenue, provision of employment and development of the local arts and culture industry.
