Police are searching for a haulage truck driver responsible for a fatal accident that occurred on Thursday afternoon at the 32km mark along the Harare-Mutare Road.

The crash involved a Tenda bus, a Phils and Pats bus, and the haulage truck, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries. The truck driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi reported that the Tenda bus was headed to Mutare, while the Phils and Pats bus was traveling to Harare.

The deceased were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary, and the injured were transported to Marondera Provincial Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, sent by the Presidium, visited the crash site to offer support to the victims and their families. He expressed sorrow over the increasing number of road accidents due to human error and urged drivers to take responsibility after accidents.

Minister Mhona emphasized the pain caused by the truck driver fleeing the scene and reiterated the need for road safety.

Preliminary investigations showed that both buses had the required paperwork, but further investigation would be conducted. He cautioned against spreading false information about such incidents and thanked those who helped rescue trapped victims.

In a separate incident, police confirmed another fatal accident on Tuesday at the 48km mark along the Mutare-Juliasdale Road.

A Ford Ranger and a Honda Fit collided head-on, resulting in four deaths and seven injuries.

The deceased were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary in Mutare, where the injured were also admitted.
