A well-known Chinhoyi snake charmer, Show Chedhu, popularly known as "Mabhemba," tragically died early Thursday morning after being bitten by a Puff Adder, one of the most venomous snakes in the region. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon and has left the local community in shock.
Chedhu, who was in his early 40s, was reportedly bitten by the snake around 16:30 hours in his yard near his fowl run. After spotting the dangerous reptile, Chedhu, who was known for his skill in charming snakes, decided to handle the Puff Adder and parade it around the Alaska Dolomite area. Onlookers, many of whom were fascinated by his antics, captured the unusual spectacle on their phones, with some images and videos going viral on social media.
According to eyewitnesses, Chedhu appeared to be visibly intoxicated as he displayed the snake in front of a local bar, where the situation took a deadly turn. While at the bar, the agitated Puff Adder struck, sinking its fangs into Chedhu's leg. "The snake's fangs were stuck in his leg, and he had to be rushed to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital immediately," said an anonymous source who witnessed the incident.
Despite urgent medical attention, Chedhu succumbed to the venom at around 0100 hours Thursday, shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
The incident has left the Chinhoyi community reeling. Chedhu, who was employed at Alaska Dolomite, leaves behind a wife and children. Friends and family are preparing to lay him to rest at his rural home in Zvimba this Saturday.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in handling venomous snakes, even for those skilled in snake charming.
