Mberengwa community complain over deteriorating bridge
4 hrs ago | Views

Mberengwa community in the Midlands have complained about the state of the Jeka river bridge, with the government being accused of neglecting their infrastructure.
An academic and villager in Mberengwa Takavafira Zhou, who once contested house of assembly elections to represent the area, said the bridge had reached a parlous state.
"The Bridge may epitomise many other areas in Zimbabwe. The colonially built bridge was destroyed by a cyclone in 2017, and eight years down, there has not been any attempt to permanently reconstruct it," Zhou said.
"Worse still, trucks plundering, looting and siphoning lithium, chrome, iron ore, emeralds, antimony and copper have destroyed the planks put by army engineers in 2017."
He said Mberengwa has abundant minerals but has suffered a resource curse, with the general populace wallowing in poverty and misery.
"Yet you hear some people claiming that there is marked development in Zimbabwe when what we have witnessed is nothing more than development of underdevelopment and the underdevelopment of development," Zhou said.
