Police have arrested a 29-year-old man believed to be the mastermind behind a wave of violent crimes that have terrorised communities across Masvingo Province since last year.
Tafadzwa Janyure Zimirenyika was apprehended on June 19 in Ngundu following months of extensive investigations by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). Authorities say Zimirenyika is linked to an astonishing 203 cases involving robbery, kidnapping, rape, theft of motor vehicles, and malicious damage to property across Mwenezi, Renco, Muchakata, Zaka, Ngundu and surrounding areas.
In a statement, the ZRP confirmed the arrest and said the suspect's criminal activities spanned nearly two years, leaving a trail of violence and fear throughout the province.
"Zimirenyika's arrest follows a sustained operation by our detectives. He is now facing multiple serious charges and has already appeared in court for initial remand," said the police.
Among the most disturbing allegations is a murder that occurred earlier this month. On June 6, Zimirenyika allegedly struck and killed Jacob Museva with a mattock at Lundi Business Centre in Mwenezi. Museva is believed to have attempted to intervene during a robbery committed by the suspect.
Zimirenyika has been remanded in custody until July 4, 2025, as investigations continue.
The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any information that may assist in the ongoing probe. Authorities also expressed gratitude to the communities affected for their cooperation during the investigations.
Further charges may be laid as new evidence emerges. The ZRP said it will provide regular updates on the case.
