Harare-based gynaecologist, Dr. Chirume, is at the centre of mounting allegations of negligence, extortion, and patient mistreatment, with several former patients accusing him of causing both medical and financial harm.

The complaints, which have begun circulating in local media, accuse Dr. Chirume of ignoring standard medical care protocols, demanding excessive payments, and creating a hostile clinical environment for patients seeking treatment.

Some patients allege that their reported symptoms were dismissed, resulting in preventable complications. Others claim they were forced to make advance payments—sometimes before a diagnosis was made or consent obtained—raising questions about transparency in his billing practices.

One woman said she was billed for unplanned treatments after her condition worsened due to what she described as the doctor's neglect. Another alleged that refusal to pay additional fees was met with threats of abandonment of care, leaving her feeling powerless and exploited.

Civil society groups and health watchdogs have called for a full investigation into Dr. Chirume's conduct, urging the Health and Allied Professions Council of Zimbabwe (HAPCZ) to audit his patient care standards, billing systems, and adherence to informed consent protocols.

Legal experts warn that if substantiated, the allegations could amount to serious breaches of medical ethics and may expose the doctor to criminal charges or civil liability.

Dr. Chirume has not yet issued a formal response to the accusations.

The unfolding controversy has triggered wider public concern about the state of women's health services in Harare. Observers say the scandal highlights systemic weaknesses in oversight and accountability within private healthcare, with economically vulnerable patients often the most at risk.
