THE vagrant who claimed to have won more than US$220 000 Star Africa Lotto jackpot after placing his bet way when the draw had been conducted was yesterday jailed two years effective.
Farai Mushoriwa (20) yesterday appeared before regional magistrate Mr Temba Kuwanda who convicted him on his own plea of guilty.
He sentenced Mushoriwa to five years imprisonment of which three years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Mr Kuwanda said he had passed a linient sentence because Mushoriwa was remorseful and had saved the court's time by pleading guilty.
He however, said only a custodial sentence would meet the justice of the case.
The agreed facts are that on January 23 this year, Mushoriwa bought three Star Africa Lotto tickets at OK Mbare for the same day draw. The draw was conducted and no one emerged a winner. The following day, Mushoriwa bought one ticket and selected the winning numbers of the previous day's draw.
The vagrant obliterated the ticket identification number, bar code, and the purchase date before proceeding to OK Adbernie claiming to have won the January 23 draw of US$224 000.
He was then referred to Star Africa Head Office. On arrival he produced four tickets and misrepresented that he had bought them all on January 23 and he had won the draw.
Officials detected the anomaly.
