Police in Nyabira are investigating the tragic death of 13-year-old Caroline Chari, who was mauled by three vicious dogs at St Mannocks Farm on 29 September.

According to a police statement, Caroline was walking home from school with four classmates when the dogs attacked. The children scattered in different directions, but the dogs pursued and caught Caroline, fatally injuring her.

"The children ran in different directions. The dogs pursued and caught up with the victim, resulting in her death. The police have since arrested the owner of the three dogs, Gift Jambaya (50)," the statement read.

Authorities revealed that the dogs had not been vaccinated since 2024, and the owner had ignored the Department of Veterinary Services' 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme.

Police expressed concern over the growing trend of vicious dogs being allowed to roam without leashes or supervision.

"It is the responsibility of dog owners to protect the public and strictly comply with safety measures. The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified operations with SPCA inspectors, local authorities, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care to decisively deal with stray dogs and impound all dogs kept in residential areas without regard for public safety," the statement added.

More details are expected to be released as investigations continue.
