Man in court after dogs maul 13-year-old girl to death

CHINHOYI - A 50-year-old man from St Mannocks Farm in Nyariba, Gift Jambaya, has appeared before the Chinhoyi Regional Court facing charges of culpable homicide after his dogs allegedly mauled a 13-year-old girl to death.
The tragic incident occurred on September 3, 2025, when Jambaya reportedly left his home, leaving six cross-breed dogs unsecured. According to court proceedings, the dogs escaped and attacked a group of schoolchildren walking home.
While most of the children managed to flee, Caroline Chari (13) was overwhelmed and suffered fatal injuries. Her remains were later discovered by a search party, bearing multiple deep cuts and bite wounds.
Jambaya has been remanded in custody, with the State opposing bail.
Legal experts say allowing dangerous dogs to roam freely constitutes a criminal failure to uphold a duty of care, especially when such negligence results in loss of life.
The case has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of animal control laws and greater public awareness around responsible pet ownership.
