MIDLANDS Proportional Representation legislator Perseverance Zhou has proposed castration for rapists and child abusers, citing the severity of the crimes and the surge in cases across Zimbabwe.

She made the remarks during a session in the House of Assembly, responding to a motion raised by the Chairperson of the Women's Affairs Committee.

"The issue of sexual abuse of young girls is topical and deeply painful," Zhou said. "Everyone knows the case of a young girl who was assaulted in broad daylight in a commuter omnibus."

Zhou argued that penalties for sexual offenders remain inadequate, especially in cases involving minors.

"When young girls are raped, there are visible physical damages. Even when the abuser is a relative, it's shameful and traumatic," she said.

She endorsed a previous proposal by another MP advocating for castration.

"Castration should be done so that they are no longer productive. They should only be able to urinate," Zhou said. "Such men are a menace and must be removed from homes and isolated."

She called for investigations into families where abuse has occurred repeatedly, suggesting that some cases may be rooted in generational trauma or psychological instability.

Zhou also referenced a viral video showing a man abusing a child in a bush, raising concerns about mental health and the need for protective measures.

"Rape is painful. Parents are struggling to protect their children, especially with the rise of drugs and illicit brews," she said.

She emphasised the need for long-term punishment and psychosocial support for victims.

"Victims may suffer psychologically and struggle with relationships. They need guidance and support to reintegrate," Zhou said. "Rapists, especially those who target children, should be castrated."
