HEADLANDS - The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Engineer Manuel José Semente, a staffer with Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), who was killed in a tragic level crossing accident in Headlands, Manicaland, on 28 November 2025.

Semente, a respected engineer, died while on official duty during a joint railway inspection with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).

In a statement issued over the weekend, the Ministry confirmed that the accident involved a CFM railway trolley and a fuel tanker, which failed to stop at the crossing. Semente sustained fatal injuries, sparking widespread grief across Zimbabwe’s transport sector.

The government, NRZ and the Ministry extended condolences to the Mozambican government, CFM, and Semente’s family.

“He was a partner in progress, contributing to the collaborative spirit and shared goals binding Zimbabwe and Mozambique,” the statement read.

Semente’s dedication to rail operations and cross-border cooperation was praised, with officials noting his contributions to regional railway development.

The incident has underscored the risks faced by transport workers and the importance of strict safety protocols at level crossings. Both Zimbabwe and Mozambique vowed to honour his legacy in advancing regional connectivity.
