The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across Zimbabwe, urging the public to take precautions as unstable weather conditions continue.

In its latest update, the MSD reported that abundant moisture over the country triggered widespread thunderstorms on Saturday, with significant rainfall recorded in several areas. Mutasa received 66mm, Esigodini 55mm, Binga 52mm, Gokwe 47mm, Chivi 45mm, Kadoma 43mm, Nyamweda 35mm, and Zvishavane 32mm. Other areas recorded less than 30mm, with moderate rain in the extreme south.

Sunday saw mostly cloudy and mild conditions nationwide, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall in some areas. As the day progressed, rainfall became more widespread, driven by rising daytime temperatures and abundant moisture. The MSD forecast for Monday indicates mostly cloudy mornings with light to moderate rain in some places, followed by warmer conditions and widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon. Heavy rainfall is expected in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Matabeleland South, Midlands, Masvingo, Manicaland, and Mashonaland East, with moderate continuous rain likely overnight.

Tuesday's outlook suggests partly cloudy and mild mornings, becoming warm and cloudy later with scattered thunderstorms. Some areas, particularly in Manicaland, Mashonaland West, and Midlands, are expected to experience heavy downpours.

The MSD has advised the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers and to seek shelter during lightning strikes to ensure safety.
