Despite a controversial beginning, Geo Pomona Waste Management has successfully transformed the Pomona dumpsite in Harare from a long-standing public health hazard and environmental eyesore into a modern, industrial, and recreational development zone.
Geo Pomona's chief executive and chairman, Dilesh Nguwaya, expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating that the project has delivered tangible benefits to the city. "Objectively speaking, the project has made a huge difference. We have cleared that dumpsite, which was a health hazard, eyesore, and impediment to development. In the process, we have changed the face of Pomona. Harare residents now appreciate our work, and we have also won awards for that," he said.
Since assuming management in April 2022, Geo Pomona has removed decades of accumulated waste, implemented modern and sustainable waste management technologies, and established infrastructure capable of generating electricity. The initiative has not only improved environmental and public health conditions but also created opportunities for industrial growth and recreational use, marking a significant milestone in urban redevelopment for Harare.
