The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has issued an update to customers and stakeholders following Wednesday's train derailment at Odzi in Mutare, confirming that export ferrochrome from the affected wagons has been successfully salvaged.

In a statement, NRZ said: "Pursuant to information issued yesterday regarding the derailment of our train in Odzi, Mutare, the NRZ wishes to update its valuable customers and other stakeholders on the recovery progress as follows: salvaging of the export ferrochrome was successfully completed by midday on 29 January."

The rail operator said a train carrying ballast and fines arrived at the site at 2pm, allowing recovery work on the damaged line to begin immediately.

"The replacement rails, sleepers and other necessary components are also in place for fixing and realignment of the tracks. We are on course to achieve the target to reopen the line to traffic by Saturday afternoon to allow movement in either direction," NRZ said.

The organisation apologised for the inconvenience caused by the derailment.
