Councillors from the City of Bulawayo on Monday refused to sign Integrity Pledges presented by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), insisting that a workshop be conducted first to explain the documents.

The signing ceremony had been scheduled to take place in the Council Chamber at the City Hall Municipal Building and was expected to include representatives from the Gwanda Municipality and Plumtree Town Council, alongside Bulawayo councillors.

Mayors and chairpersons, town clerks and secretaries, councillors, and heads of departments from the three local authorities were due to append their signatures to the integrity pledges as part of ZACC's anti-corruption drive.

However, when the documents were distributed, Bulawayo councillors declined to sign, arguing that they needed a dedicated workshop to fully understand the contents and implications of the pledge before committing themselves.

The development reportedly left ZACC officials and Bulawayo City management in a quandary, as the programme had been arranged for immediate signing.

Following the refusal, Bulawayo councillors adjourned to a committee room for further deliberations on the matter, while their counterparts from Gwanda and Plumtree proceeded to sign the pledges.

It was not immediately clear when the proposed workshop would be held or whether the signing ceremony would be rescheduled.
