The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed deploying officers to the offices of prominent lawyer and politician Tendai Biti on Thursday morning, 5 March 2026, saying the move was meant to maintain law and order.

In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi said police officers had been stationed at Biti's offices since early morning. However, the police did not provide details on what prompted the operation at the law firm, which is located in a generally quiet neighbourhood.

The deployment has raised questions after reports circulated alleging that Biti's driver had been assaulted during the incident.

Nyathi dismissed the claims, saying officers stationed at the premises did not witness any attack.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of traditional media enquiries and social media postings on the alleged attack on Tendai Biti's driver at his offices," Nyathi said.

"For the record, the Zimbabwe Republic Police deployed police officers at Tendai Biti's offices since morning for the maintenance of law and order.

"Tendai Biti and his driver left the premises between 1100 hours and 1200 hours, with Tendai Biti cordially engaging and discussing with a police officer (Inspector) without any hassles or clashes.

"The police officers at the scene did not see or witness anyone beating or assault on Tendai Biti's driver."

Nyathi added that if the alleged assault occurred at another location where there was no police deployment, Biti and his driver should formally report the matter to enable investigations.

"If the assault incident occurred at another office which had no ZRP deployment, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges Tendai Biti and his driver to make an official report so that investigations can be conducted," he said.

The incident has drawn attention on social media, with some users questioning the circumstances surrounding the police presence at the offices of the former Finance Minister. However, authorities maintain that the deployment was solely for maintaining order.
