A 30-year-old self-styled prophet from Glen View has been arrested following the alleged assault and death of his neighbour and friend after a drinking dispute.

Perfect Fungai Mukondo is accused of attacking Talent Tarwirei, also 30, after the two men had been drinking beer together.

According to reports, the altercation escalated into a violent confrontation during which Mukondo allegedly tackled Tarwirei to the ground. He is said to have tied a maroon cloth around Tarwirei's neck and pulled it while sitting on his back.

After several minutes, Mukondo reportedly left the scene, leaving Tarwirei lying motionless on the ground.

Residents later gathered at the scene and found Tarwirei unresponsive. They removed the cloth from his neck and sought assistance from a nearby nurse, who confirmed that he had no pulse.

A resident, speaking to H-Metro, said Mukondo was known in the community for heavy drinking and violent behaviour despite his religious claims.

"We could not separate them while they were fighting because Perfect is very violent," the resident said.

The matter was reported to the police, who arrived at the scene as Mukondo was reportedly preparing to leave for prayers, dressed in white garments. He was immediately arrested.

Tarwirei's body was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
