A 37-year-old soldier, Challenge Kutadzaushe, has appeared before a Harare magistrate facing a murder charge following the death of Tadiwanashe Matapeta.
The court heard that the incident occurred on March 15 after a dispute between the two men over an Okapi knife. Prosecutors allege that Kutadzaushe struck Matapeta once on the nose, causing him to fall and hit his head on the edge of a snooker table, resulting in a severe injury.
It is further alleged that the accused carried the injured man to a nearby shack, where he left him lying motionless before returning to his residence.
According to the State, Kutadzaushe returned the following day and found the victim still unresponsive. He allegedly attempted to assist by buying maheu and trying to feed him, but the victim struggled to drink.
Police later acted on a tip-off and found the victim in a critical condition at the shack, with the accused present at the scene. Kutadzaushe was subsequently arrested.
The victim was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital, where medical examinations, including a CT scan, confirmed a severe head injury. He was admitted to the intensive care unit but later succumbed to his injuries.
The case is ongoing as the court process continues.
