A 56-year-old man from Malala Village has been arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing his wife during a family meeting intended to resolve a long-standing domestic dispute.
The suspect, Mukhosi Shadreck Mulaudzi Muthavhatsindi, is reported to have turned violent on Sunday afternoon at Matshiloni Village after relatives suggested that the couple consider divorce following unsuccessful reconciliation efforts.
According to police, the couple had been living in South Africa and returned to Zimbabwe on April 24, 2026, amid escalating marital tensions. Upon arrival, the husband went to his home in Malala Village while the wife stayed with her family in Matshiloni Village.
The Officer Commanding Beitbridge, Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, confirmed the incident, saying the two families convened a meeting on April 26 in an attempt to resolve the dispute with the assistance of a mediator.
He said emotions flared during discussions when relatives advised that divorce would be the most peaceful resolution after prolonged conflict between the couple.
"This did not go down well with the suspect, and an argument ensued," Chief Supt Ncube said.
Police allege that Muthavhatsindi suddenly attacked his wife, who attempted to flee and hide behind a house within the homestead. He reportedly pursued her and stabbed her once on the left side of the chest. She collapsed and died at the scene.
After the attack, the suspect attempted to flee but was chased down and apprehended by members of the community before being handed over to police.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that the suspect is now in custody awaiting his initial court appearance, while the body of the deceased has been taken for post-mortem examination.
Authorities said investigations into the fatal incident are ongoing.
