Outspoken ZIPRA war veteran and former ZAPU member Max Mkandla has welcomed the appointment of retired army commander Philip Valerio Sibanda to the Zanu PF Politburo, describing him as a disciplined and unifying leader capable of promoting peace and national cohesion.
Speaking in an interview, Mkandla said Sibanda's military background, professionalism and liberation‑war credentials made him suitable for a senior political role within the ruling party.
"I think that is a very good decision that has been taken for this well‑disciplined and well‑trained former army commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces," Mkandla said.
He praised Sibanda for his leadership during international military deployments under United Nations missions, saying he demonstrated professionalism and competence in conflict‑resolution and peacekeeping operations.
"Judging by the experience based on how he was deployed during his heydays in United Nations missions on military issues, trying to bring sanity in countries facing conflict, he performed his duties very well," he said.
Mkandla described Sibanda as a disciplined leader who carefully assesses situations and works towards unity.
"Valerio is a disciplined army commander and someone who can control situations and do his level best in uniting people," he added.
He said former ZAPU and ZIPRA members viewed Sibanda as a potential national unifier who could help bridge divisions in the country.
"As former ZAPU members, we believe he is the right person should the time come for leadership transition. If Vice President Kembo Mohadi decides to retire, Valerio would be the rightful person to take over," Mkandla said.
He clarified, however, that they were not calling for an immediate leadership change but were expressing confidence in Sibanda's leadership qualities.
"We are not saying he must take over immediately, but in the event of retirement, he is someone who can move the country forward," he said.
Mkandla said Sibanda's liberation‑struggle background and professional conduct distinguished him as a leader capable of promoting unity without tribal or regional bias.
"He is a unifier, someone who can unite people without any form of tribalism or regionalism," he said.
The veteran further credited Sibanda for helping foster unity between former ZANLA and ZIPRA forces after independence.
"He managed to unite ZANLA and ZIPRA and executed his duties professionally without favour," Mkandla noted.
He said Sibanda's appointment to the Politburo would strengthen efforts towards peace, discipline, development and respect across the country.
"We are happy to see him appointed to that political level so that he can execute his duties properly and work towards peace, freedom, development, discipline and respect," Mkandla said.
