KWEKWE – Two miners died and three others escaped after a shaft collapse at Migilant Mine in Kwekwe on 7 July 2026 at around 1900 hours, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the deceased were Busani Nyathi and Proud Maphosa, both male adults.
Mahoko said the five men were working underground at approximately 200 metres when a block of soil collapsed from the roof of the shaft.
“Three of them safely exited the shaft and the now deceased men remained,” Mahoko said. Police attended the scene and retrieved the bodies.
He urged all mining operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations.
“We remind all persons who do mining business to follow all safety guidelines provided under the Mines and Minerals Act, Chapter 21:05,” Mahoko said, reinforcing ongoing calls for improved compliance under Zimbabwe mine safety regulations.
