Man says he spent US$31,700 lobola on 4 failed marriages

A Zimbabwean man, Blessing Togarepi, says he spent a total of US$31,700 on lobola across four marriages between 2020 and 2026, with each union ending in separation.
According to Togarepi, his marriages were all short-lived, with the longest lasting just 14 days, while one reportedly ended before he and his bride had spent a single night together.
His first marriage, in 2020, was to Anita Nyoni, for whom he paid US$9,200 in lobola. Togarepi claims the marriage lasted less than a week after Nyoni allegedly left their matrimonial home following domestic disputes. The separation was followed by disagreements between the two families over the circumstances surrounding the breakup.
In 2021, Togarepi married Natasha Chamisa after paying US$18,000 in lobola. The couple held what he described as a lavish wedding and later had a son together. However, he says the marriage lasted only 14 days before the relationship broke down.
His third marriage was to Providence Kufakwenyika, for whom he paid US$1,000 in lobola. Togarepi alleges that the union ended after just five days.
His most recent marriage took place in 2026 when he paid US$3,500 in lobola to marry Aisha Chihota. According to Togarepi, Chihota never moved into their matrimonial home, and the couple never spent a night together as husband and wife.
The dispute was subsequently heard before Chief Mutasa's traditional court, which reportedly ordered that the lobola paid for the marriage be refunded.
Togarepi's account has attracted widespread public attention, highlighting the emotional and financial challenges that can accompany marital disputes and raising debate over the role of customary practices in resolving failed marriages.
