Police warn reckless drivers

Motorists caught speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or violating traffic regulations risk arrest and possible imprisonment as police intensify road safety operations during the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day holidays.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said yesterday that law enforcement agencies had stepped up deployments and road safety measures across the country, particularly along major highways.

Motorists should expect breathalyser tests and speed traps as police move to curb road traffic accidents during the holiday period.

"It is the responsibility of all drivers to ensure that they are there to be counted through those regulations," Comm Nyathi said.

He warned motorists against exceeding stipulated speed limits, saying speed traps had been activated on major roads.

"We are also saying for those who will be found to be speeding in such a way that they drive above the stipulated speed limit for particular sections of the road, then they risk being arrested because the speed traps are certainly on and fully operational," he said.

Comm Nyathi said offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law, with cases warranting prosecution being referred to the courts.

"Remember, the laws of the country are very clear on anyone who violates the country's rules and regulations," he said.

"The police is there to ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour and, where appropriate, those who should go to court will certainly go to court."

While the outcome of each case will depend on the offence and the sentence imposed by the courts, motorists convicted of offences carrying custodial sentences could face imprisonment.

The heightened police presence comes as Zimbabwe marks Heroes Day today and Defence Forces Day tomorrow, with the holidays expected to bring increased traffic volumes, public gatherings and movement along major routes.

Comm Nyathi said police had already deployed officers to ensure public safety during national, provincial and city-level commemorations, as well as other gatherings taking place across the country.

"The police have already made adequate deployments in terms of the various activities taking place at national, provincial and city level, and also other gatherings," he said.

"So certainly the police is on full alert, and the public is guaranteed of their safety and security."

Police urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving after consuming alcohol and comply with all traffic regulations.

Authorities said responsible driving would be critical in reducing road crashes and ensuring that families and communities enjoy a safe holiday period.
