Human rights defender Bhekimpilo Mbedzi is finally going home tonight after weeks of uncertainty, separation and waiting following his arrest over social media posts calling for protests against Zimbabwe's Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 of 2026.

Mbedzi's return has brought relief to his family and supporters, who have thanked everyone who stood by them throughout the ordeal.

The family expressed gratitude to those who prayed for Mbedzi, provided financial and legal assistance, shared information, made phone calls, sent messages of solidarity and offered other forms of support.

Mbedzi was arrested in July after posting a video on social media calling for protests against the recently enacted constitutional amendment.

He was subsequently charged with allegedly inciting an unlawful gathering, with the State accusing him of failing to notify the relevant authorities of the planned event.

On August 3, the High Court of Zimbabwe granted Mbedzi bail. His release, however, did not bring the legal proceedings to an end, as he remains facing charges relating to the alleged unlawful gathering.

Human rights organisations have called for the charges against Mbedzi to be dropped, arguing that his prosecution amounts to punishment for the peaceful exercise of his rights.

His return home tonight marks an emotional moment for his family and supporters after weeks of legal uncertainty and separation.

The family said it remained grateful to everyone who helped them navigate the difficult period and continued to stand with Mbedzi.
