A BULAWAYO teenager sneaked into a fowl run in Makokoba and stole five broilers intending to spoil his pregnant wife who has a penchant for white meat, a magistrate heard.
Sipho Moyo, 19, of Makokoba was convicted on his own plea of guilty to theft by magistrate Sibongile Msipa.
He was sentenced to six months in jail of which three months were suspended on condition that he does not within that period commit a similar crime.
The remaining three months were suspended on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service starting Monday at Tredgold Building.
When the magistrate asked Moyo why he stole the chickens, he responded: "Your worship I'm sorry, I wanted to give the birds to my pregnant wife who loves chicken."
Prosecuting, Charles Danda said on October 9 this year Moyo and his friend Tapera Chisungwa went to Mkambo Market in Makokoba and jumped over a fence. They sneaked into a chicken run and stole five broilers. They however, ran out of luck when the chickens squawked attracting the attention of a security guard who subsequently apprehended them.
"Moyo and Chisungwa stole five chickens but the noise of the chickens alerted a security guard manning the premises who apprehended them," said Danda.
The court heard that when the two men realised that they had been seen, they bolted out of the fowl run and fled with the security guard in pursuit.
Moyo dropped four of the chickens.
The security guard managed to catch up with Chisungwa while Moyo was apprehended by a member of the public who handed him over to the police. The five stolen chickens valued at $40 were recovered.
Chisungwa was remanded in custody to today.
