Despite challenges faced in Zimbabwe, there has been a quite revolution in the country's music industry. Where there was only a handful of prominent artists before, now there is a wide variety of genres to cater to all tastes. The quality has improved mainly driven by a "go-getter" attitude where musicians are no longer settling for less than what is best.
Although most genres, namely hip hop, dancehall and gospel have outside influences, there is now an authenticity in the Zimbabwean sound that wasn't there before.
With this in mind, Beats98.com was developed as an innovative and simplified way for artists to promote and sell their music internationally.
The web-based platform, which boasts links to networks that reach more than 6 million visitors a month, aims to provide a large catalogue of African music and books. The objective is to promote African music to the world in the digital age in a convenient & affordable manner.
Before a purchase is made, customers can browse and play 45 second samples (per track) and can then either buy one track or a whole album.
Beats98 is an online media player and library and once a track has been bought, one has the freedom to download it at as many times as they want or play in full anytime as long as they are logged in and connected to the internet. Beats98 can be used to play, download, and organise digital audio.
Artists will benefit from free registration and they can then upload their own tracks and books and monitor downloads. The service also comes with a built in user-friendly dashboard that allows artist to monitor revenue from downloads.
Without further ado here is a random selection of albums and singles by Zimbabwean musicians at home and abroad that you really need to have on your playlist.
