A 20-year-old car wash attendant, Albert Chimukuyu, has been convicted of theft after stealing a client's bag containing US$10,000 in cash and a loaded Makarov pistol from a Mercedes Benz in Harare.

Chimukuyu committed the crime on March 21, 2025, while on duty at a Mabelreign car wash. Instead of performing his assigned work, he fled with the valuables. Following a tip-off, police tracked him to Pamuzinda Lodge in Claudina, where detectives recovered US$1,850 hidden in his trousers.

A subsequent search also recovered the stolen pistol and bag. Of the US$11,600 believed to have been stolen, police said only US$3,450 has been recovered so far.

Harare Magistrates' Court sentenced Chimukuyu to 13 months in prison, with five months suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective eight-month jail term.
