A 20-year-old woman, Memory Moyana, appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court last week, charged with the fatal assault of her four-year-old daughter. The suspect, from Mabvuku, was remanded in custody to January 2, 2025. Magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu advised Moyana to seek bail through the High Court.
According to Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu, the tragic incident unfolded on December 16. A neighbor, Lorraine Makore, witnessed Moyana whipping her daughter. Later, Makore saw the young girl emerge from the house with visible bruises on her chest and mouth, as well as bloodstained clothes.
Concerned, Makore confronted Moyana about the violent assault, but Moyana reportedly dragged her daughter back into the house. That was the last time the child was seen alive.
Later in the day, Moyana and her husband were seen carrying the lifeless body of their daughter, reportedly on their way to visit a prophet. The prophet declared the child dead, prompting the couple to file a police report, which led to Moyana's arrest.
The case has sparked public outrage, with the community reeling from the tragic loss of the young child. Moyana now faces serious charges as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child's death.
