PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved the recall of Chief Fortune Charumbira, Chief Nhema (Rangarirai Bwawanda) of Zaka and Chief Chitanga (Feleni Chauke) of Mwenezi from the National Council of Chiefs, paving the way for their removal from the Senate.
Local Government and Public Works Permanent Secretary Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti announced the President's approval during a meeting of the Provincial Councils of Chiefs from across the country in Harare.
The decision follows a vote of no confidence by the Masvingo Provincial Chiefs Assembly, which accused the three traditional leaders of undermining presidential authority.
Chief Charumbira serves as Deputy President of the National Council of Chiefs.
Muguti confirmed that the recall followed a recommendation by the Masvingo Provincial Chiefs Assembly but did not disclose further details of the allegations against the three chiefs.
Meanwhile, National Council of Chiefs of Zimbabwe president Chief Mtshane Khumalo told the Masvingo Mirror that he was unaware of the recalls because he was out of the office.
Khumalo, however, warned that approving the recalls would be disastrous.
The President's approval sets in motion a process that could result in the three traditional leaders losing their seats in the Senate, where chiefs are represented as part of Zimbabwe's parliamentary system.
