A group of thugs is reportedly ambushing motorists along Harare-Mutare highway, in Chipembere.
According to motorists the thugs are throwing objects at oncoming vehicles in bid to cause accidents so that they find a favourable environment to loot from the victims in the name of helping.
"There are thugs who are throwing objects at oncoming cars in trying to cause accidents so that they come and steal from us.
"On Thursday I got in that situation as I was travelling to Mutare the thugs threw an object at a Toyota Hilux that was way ahead of me and they missed their target, I only saw a group coming from the tar when I got closer before I noticed they threw an object and destroyed headlights but I never stopped.
"When I travelled about 10 kilometers away from the scene I saw the Hilux guys checking their car and I stopped to check mine, they told me that the thugs have been operating there for more than 3 months.
"I strongly suspect the thugs are working with the police in their dealings, because when I reported at Mutare police station they said they knew about it and will soon apprehend them," a motorist told Bulawayo24.com.
Police in Mutare confirmed they have the reports and are trying to apprehend the culprits.
