A political commentator Petros Joseph Dube‎ has challenged President Robert Mugabe to apologise and initiate the compensation of the Gukurahundi victims of the 1980s.

Over 20 000 people were killed by the fifth brigade soldiers in the 1980s as Zanu PF government sought to crash on the alleged Zipra renegades who were called dissidents.

"I am fully convinced that the victims of Gukurahundi genocide who are mostly residents of some parts of Matebeleland and Midlands can forgive the perpetrators of the genocide if they sincerely apologise , compensate the victims and allow those who can to exhume and rebury their relatives in a dignified manner," Dube said.

"Calling it the " Moment of Madness " or " A closed chapter " is not enough and clearly shows that the perpetrators are unrepentant and unremorseful."

He said humbling himself and apologising will make a huge difference but sweeping such a sensitive issue under the rug will simply postpone the problem to the next generation.
