A-24-YEAR-Old man from Plumtree is battling for life at the United Bulawayo Hospitals after he was allegedly stabbed by his friend for buying the wrong type of alcohol.

Chidzi Sibanda of Masendu area in Madlambudzi was allegedly stabbed once in the chest by Irvine Nkomo (26) of the same area.

Nkomo has since been arrested.

The incident occurred at around 8PM on Saturday when the two were drinking beer with their friend and neighbour, Mano Moyo (22) at Masendu Business Centre.

The trio allegedly contributed an equal amount of money to buy 750ml of Skippers Spirit, but Sibanda went to a bar and bought 200ml of Nikolai, triggering the stabbing.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.

"I can confirm we received a report of a case of attempted murder and the victim is battling for life in hospital. A friend stabbed him once in the chest during a misunderstanding over alcohol. The suspect was arrested.

"We appeal to members of the public to desist from violence. When disputes arise, people need to learn to involve third parties and avoid fighting as violence results in unnecessary loss of lives and injuries. When misunderstandings and fights break out, walking away is always the best solution," he said.

A witness, Mr Mthokozisi Moyo said after Sibanda was stabbed he was rushed to Masendu Clinic and was referred to Plumtree District Hospital. He was then transferred to United Bulawayo Hospitals.

"The trio contributed money with the intention to buy Skippers, their favourite type of spirit. When Sibanda came carrying Nikolai, Nkomo told him to return it and get Skippers or give him back his money," he said.

When Sibanda refused to comply, Nkomo allegedly drew a knife from his pocket and stabbed him.

"Their friend Mano shouted for help and people rushed to the scene. Mano got a wheel barrow from one of the stores and we rushed Sibanda to Masendu Clinic. He was further referred to Plumtree District Hospital but because of his critical condition, they transferred him to United Bulawayo Hospitals," he said.

"Villagers at the business centre quickly apprehended Nkomo and handed him over to police."
