Two men were chased in their vehicle and shot by prison officers - allegedly for trespassing at a training facility for prison officers in Harare.

Police and prisons said Tavonga Mashange and Tinashe Tanyanyiwa, who were driving in a blue Honda Fit, trespassed into a "sensitive area" at Chikurubi Training School on September 23, sparking a vehicle chase which ended in the shooting in Mandara.

Desmond Nyambirai, a prison officer, is believed to have carried out the shooting, wounding the two men. Mashange is in a critical condition at the Trauma Centre in Borrowdale.

Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, the spokesperson for Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, said: "Our officers responded swiftly after noticing that the intruders had parked their vehicle at a very sensitive and guarded area.

"After noticing that they had been spotted, the intruders fled the scene and did not take orders from prison officers who had fired warning shots."

The "sensitive area" is believed to be the training school's armoury.
