US$110m for Old Gwanda Road upgrade

Cabinet has greenlit a US$110 million investment under a Public-Private-Partnership for the construction and enhancement of the 120KM Old Gwanda Road by Zwane Enterprise, with expectations for completion within a year from commencement.
Zwane Enterprise had previously expressed interest in the gravel road's construction, allocating a budget of US$150 million for the project. Feasibility studies have been underway in recent months, with plans to relocate approximately 43 homesteads to accommodate the project. The government has revealed intentions to involve the private sector in major road construction projects using the Built-Operate and Transfer model.
During a post-Cabinet media briefing, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere disclosed Cabinet's approval of Zwane Enterprises' proposal to rehabilitate Old Gwanda Road at a cost of US$110 million. The project, encompassing the upgrading and tolling of the road, will be executed through a Build-Operate-Transfer arrangement.
The construction, slated for completion in 12 months, will be financed entirely by Zwane Enterprises, with revenue recouped through tolling points along the road, including two toll gates. Zwane Enterprises' CEO, Engineer Bekithemba Mbambo, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential for value chain benefits and local employment creation.
Preparations for the project, including the relocation of affected communities, are underway, with approximately 43 homesteads slated for relocation before construction commences. Eng Mbambo, drawing inspiration from President Mnangagwa's philosophy, underscores the project's significance in rejuvenating infrastructure and fostering socio-economic development.
