A 37-year-old woman from Zvimba, Paidamoyo Makayi, appeared in Chinhoyi Magistrates Court on Saturday for allegedly attempting to poison her daughter's schoolmates.
Makayi, who is from Murombedzi village under Chief Zvimba, faces six counts of attempted murder under section 189 (l) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act chapter 9:23. She was remanded to June 20 for a bail application.
The incident occurred on June 7, 2024, when Makayi prepared rice and soup, packed it into lunch boxes, and instructed her daughter to share the food with her peers at Matoranhembe Primary School, Murombedzi. The schoolmates who ate the food experienced severe abdominal pains and vomiting, and were rushed to Murombedzi Rural Hospital for treatment.
Makayi's daughter revealed that her mother had prepared and packed the food, and had given specific instructions on how to distribute it among her classmates. Initially, police reported that eight pupils were affected, but it was later confirmed that six children had been hospitalized.
