A senior manager at Old Mutual, Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika (41), appeared in court on charges of raping a 23-year-old female student who was on attachment at the company.

Manyika, who serves as the Business Development Manager and oversees the Old Mutual Scholarship programme, was granted free bail by Harare Magistrate Mrs. Marehwanazvo Gofa. The case has been remanded to January 15, 2025, for the allocation of a potential trial date.

The allegations stem from incidents reported by the complainant. According to the State, the first incident occurred in November 2022 when Manyika reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to the intern, requesting her assistance in packing banners at Old Mutual Gardens. Upon her arrival, the complainant was directed to Manyika's office, where he allegedly locked the door. After packing the banners, Manyika is accused of pushing the complainant onto a table and raping her.

The second incident allegedly occurred on June 19, 2024, when Manyika contacted the complainant again. The two met at Ashbrittle Shops, where Manyika reportedly invited her into his car. He is accused of becoming intimate with her against her will.

The complainant filed a police report following the June incident, leading to Manyika's arrest.

Old Mutual has not issued a public statement on the matter, and the case remains under investigation. The allegations have sparked discussions about workplace safety and the protection of interns and junior employees.

Manyika has not yet entered a plea, and his legal representatives have not commented on the charges.
