A 28-year-old man from Old Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo was arrested last Sunday night after security personnel at a local nightclub discovered he was carrying what appeared to be a real gun, which later turned out to be a toy.
The suspect, Tafadzwa Mugova, who is unemployed, was stopped and searched by nightclub security officers as he tried to enter the venue. Upon search, the security team found a pistol-sized metal pellet gun with a magazine and one pellet ball in his possession.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrest, saying police responded to a report that a man was found with a firearm at the nightclub. "Police received a report that a man had been found in possession of a gun whilst trying to enter a nightclub in Old Magwegwe suburb and officers attended the scene," she said.
"The suspect was apprehended by nightclub security who were searching patrons entering the establishment. Police officers who attended the scene observed that it was a pistol-sized metal pellet gun with a magazine and one pellet ball."
When questioned by police, Mugova explained that he had purchased the toy gun at the Harare Agricultural Show last year. He further stated that he went to the nightclub looking for his brother, who had left with their house keys.
Mugova remains in custody as investigations continue.
