A mysterious fire has been burning in the home of a Johane Masowe Apostolic Church member in Chegutu since last Thursday, leaving residents puzzled and prompting an appeal for assistance from spiritual leaders.

The fire, located in Ward 12, Kaguvi Phase IV, has persisted for over a week despite efforts to control it. Most of the house's property has been removed, with only a burnt mattress visible in the courtyard. The incident has attracted many curious neighbours and community members.

Chegutu Deputy Mayor Edward Dzeka described the fire as baffling and unusual. Speaking to H-Metro, he said, "I witnessed this myself, it's something that doesn't require our Fire Brigade."

Dzeka explained that the fire reportedly started inside a refrigerator, spread to a broom, and then ignited a church garment that the homeowner intended to wear during prayers.

Chegutu Municipal Council's Public Relations Officer, Gift Chikaka, confirmed that the Fire Brigade attended the scene but found no active flames, only ashes and soot from burnt property. "Our team arrived at the house and there was no visible fire, but they did find ashes and soot from burnt property," Chikaka said. The team is currently monitoring the situation.

A neighbour, who wished to be identified only as Chihera, suggested that the fire might be linked to charms or spiritual practices used to seek wealth. "People should live a normal life and enjoy the fruits of their labour instead of seeking shortcuts to riches," she said.

Chihera also criticized those she called hypocritical Christians, warning, "Look what has happened here because of this desire for a quick route to fame and fortune-property, clothing, and other household goods have been reduced to ashes."

She further claimed that anointing water provided by church leaders failed to extinguish the flames and that pouring it only intensified the fire.

Attempts to get comments from the homeowner were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor continues to call on spiritual leaders and clergymen to assist in extinguishing the mysterious blaze and restoring peace to the neighbourhood.
