Residents of Mbizo 19 in Kwekwe are reeling in shock after a gruesome discovery this week involving a stray dog feeding on the remains of a new-born baby near a local church construction site.
According to eyewitnesses, the disturbing incident unfolded earlier this week when residents noticed the dog carrying what appeared to be human body parts. Upon closer inspection, they found the dog feasting on the infant's remains, triggering panic and horror in the community.
"The body was discovered near a church that is still under construction. No one knows who left the baby there or whether it was already dead when it was dumped," said one resident, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Authorities were alerted and police reportedly recovered the remains, which have since been taken to a local mortuary. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and possible death of the infant are now underway.
The incident has left the tight-knit community shaken, with residents questioning how such a tragic and inhumane act could occur unnoticed.
This comes amid growing public concern over the presence of stray and dangerous dogs in urban areas. Recently, there have been multiple reports of pitbull attacks in various parts of the country, raising fears about animal control and public safety.
Efforts to reach Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko for official comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The horrifying discovery has renewed calls for both better security monitoring and stricter control of stray animals, as well as greater awareness around child protection and the importance of reporting suspected cases of infanticide or baby dumping.
Police are urging anyone with information about the baby or those responsible for the abandonment to come forward.
