Bulawayo is mourning after two fatal hit-and-run accidents claimed the lives of pedestrians within just over a month.

The most recent incident occurred on 10 September at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Way and Connaught Avenue. A male pedestrian, yet to be identified, was struck by an unknown motorist while walking in a black T-shirt and blue trousers. He sustained head injuries and bruises to his chest and knees before being rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he died around 06:00 hours, Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu confirmed.

The earlier tragedy took place on 16 August along Khami Road near Mpopoma Drive, where Melu Ngwenya was hit by a motorist who fled the scene. Ngwenya, wearing black jeans, a black T-shirt, and slippers, was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital but died upon admission after briefly giving his name to the ambulance crew, Asst Insp Ndlovu said.

Assistant Inspector Ndlovu urged both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution. "We encourage drivers to exercise proper lookout when driving, and also desist from the tendency of running away after an accident but instead render assistance in any way possible," she said. She also advised the public to visit Mpilo Hospital or the nearest police station for body identification if they are missing a relative.

Police investigations into both hit-and-run cases are ongoing as authorities continue the search for the motorists responsible for these tragic deaths.
