The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has reintroduced passenger train services on key routes linking Harare and Mutare, as well as Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, starting 17 October 2025. The trains will operate twice a week on these routes using economy and standard class coaches, marking a significant expansion of rail travel options for Zimbabweans.

The move follows a strong public response to the Sanganayi/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Train service, which operated during the recent Sanganayi/Hlanganani Travel Expo. According to NRZ, over 1,000 passengers took part in the Travel Expo train journeys, which featured sleeper and dining coaches with premium fares, highlighting the public's appetite for rail travel.

In a statement issued in September, NRZ expressed appreciation for stakeholder support and confirmed plans to offer train services more regularly across the country. The railway company emphasized that standard and economy class coaches will now be introduced to make rail travel more affordable for regular leisure and passenger services.

The Harare - Mutare service, which is part of this initiative, began in the week of 13 October 2025 at a fare of S5 per passenger. Meanwhile, logistics are being finalised to resume the Bulawayo - Victoria Falls route, reflecting NRZ's commitment to providing reliable and accessible rail transport.

NRZ has pledged to continue engaging with the public and incorporating feedback to improve passenger experiences, aiming to make train travel a convenient and affordable option for Zimbabweans across the country.
