Traditional leaders in Matabeleland South Province have expressed deep concern over the growing HIV prevalence in the region, particularly in Bulilima and Mangwe districts, which they attribute to the erosion of traditional values and the rise of permissive western cultural influences.

In an interview, Chief Sangulube of Mangwe said the community was witnessing a worrying increase in HIV infections among young people, warning that the abandonment of traditional norms in favour of western lifestyles was fueling risky sexual behaviour.

"As traditional leaders, we are equally concerned about the rate at which teenagers are getting infected by this deadly pandemic," Chief Sangulube said.

"The infiltration of western culture has destroyed ubuntu bethu. The youths' dress codes and their drug abuse behaviours by both sexes are uncouth."

He commended the National Aids Council (NAC) for its "Not In My Village" programme, which is being implemented in several communities across the province to raise awareness about HIV prevention. The initiative also addresses issues of child marriages and teenage pregnancies, while encouraging communities to take a firm stance on social discipline.

"We give credit to the Not In My Village concept by NAC. As we implement this, we advise both traditional leaders and community members not to spare the rod," Chief Sangulube said.

"The government might call it child abuse, but we call it disciplining, because we don't beat to injure but to instill respect."

HIV prevalence in Matabeleland South remains among the highest in Zimbabwe, with health authorities and community leaders continuing to collaborate on awareness and prevention strategies targeting young people.

The chiefs have called for renewed emphasis on cultural values, responsible behaviour, and community-based interventions to curb the spread of the virus and protect future generations.
