A detective constable attached to CID Nkulumane in Bulawayo, Wellington Ndoro (38), appeared in court alongside three accomplices facing charges of attempted robbery. Ndoro, Felias Mvula, Julius Mugwagwa, and Silence Kwangwa appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira on Thursday. They were not asked to plead, only confirming the allegations against them. All four were remanded in custody and are set to return to court on 16 December.
State prosecutor Hazel Ncube told the court that Ndoro and his accomplices planned to rob Mr Casey Bean, a Victoria Falls resident, after learning he kept large sums of money and valuables at his home. On 14 December 2023, the accused travelled from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, arriving around 9 PM. They were spotted by Bean's daughter, who alerted him to the presence of intruders in the yard. One of the accused attempted to force open the main door, while another remained outside as a sentry, with Ndoro stationed in a getaway vehicle, a Toyota Corolla.
The complainant immediately alerted the neighbourhood watch and police, prompting a swift response. Bean armed himself with a knobkerrie, forcing the intruders to flee by scaling the precast wall. Ndoro started the getaway vehicle, while the sentry jumped in to drive away at high speed. The neighbourhood watch, in a Toyota Land Cruiser, gave chase and successfully rammed the Corolla from behind, stopping it. Two of the accused fled on foot.
Police and neighbourhood watch teams launched a search operation. Ndoro was found hiding at a residence, while Mvula was apprehended in a trench along a road. Mugwagwa and Kwangwa were later arrested in Bulawayo by CID Homicide officers, who recovered a pistol with an erased serial number. The investigation into the attempted robbery is ongoing.
