Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the 29-year-old son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has been arrested alongside four other men following a police operation at a guest lodge in Harare.

The arrests, carried out on November 3 at The Brompton Guest Lodge in Newlands, also resulted in the seizure of two luxury vehicles suspected of having been unlawfully imported into Zimbabwe or retained in the country beyond their permitted temporary import periods.

The other four suspects were identified as Munashe Mubawu, 43, Terrence Johannes Chinyemba, 42, Fredson Peter, 33, and Solomon Pamire, 34.

Authorities confiscated a black Lamborghini Urus and a black Mercedes-Benz GLE 53, both bearing South African registration plates.

The vehicles are being investigated over suspicions that they may have entered Zimbabwe without complying with customs requirements or remained in the country after the expiry of their temporary import permits.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) confirmed the operation, indicating that the seizure formed part of ongoing asset recovery efforts.

Investigators are expected to establish the vehicles' ownership, importation history and compliance with the country's customs regulations.

Temporary import permits generally allow foreign-registered vehicles to enter Zimbabwe for a specified period, subject to applicable customs conditions.

Failure to comply with those conditions can expose vehicle owners or responsible parties to enforcement action, depending on the circumstances.

However, the seizure of the two vehicles does not, by itself, establish that they were smuggled or unlawfully retained in Zimbabwe.

Chatunga and his four co-accused are also expected to appear in court on November 5 to face assault charges.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault were not detailed in the information released.

The latest arrest places Chatunga back in the public spotlight following previous encounters with law enforcement authorities involving allegations of violence and immigration-related matters.

As a member of Zimbabwe's former first family, Chatunga has frequently attracted media attention over his lifestyle and legal controversies.

His latest case is likely to generate further interest because of the high-value vehicles involved and the participation of the country's anti-corruption authorities.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the vehicles' presence in Zimbabwe are continuing, while the five suspects await their scheduled court appearance.

The allegations against the accused have not yet been determined by a court, and they remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
