Businessman and former Shabanie Mashava Mines (SMM) owner Mutumwa Mawere has died. He was 66.

Mawere passed away in South Africa on Thursday and is believed to have succumbed to complications arising from a stroke he suffered in 2024.

His elder brother, Vincent Mawere, confirmed the death.

"I received the news that my brother passed on in South Africa where he was staying. He suffered a stroke in 2024," he said.
"However, I am yet to get full details about what actually transpired."

Mawere was a prominent businessman who owned SMM in the mid‑1990s, when it operated as Zimbabwe's sole asbestos mining company. He had been based in South Africa for several years.
