A 38-year-old fugitive from Plumtree who allegedly unleashed a reign of terror in the border town before fleeing the country has been re-arrested after being deported from Malawi, bringing an abrupt end to his cross-border escape.

Cabangani Mathe, a former businessman based in Plumtree, was taken into custody upon his return to Zimbabwe after Malawian authorities reportedly discovered that he was in the country without any form of identification or valid travel documents.

Further investigations into his identity allegedly revealed that Mathe was a wanted fugitive in Zimbabwe. The discovery triggered his deportation and subsequent arrest by members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Homicide unit soon after he crossed back into the country.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating that Mathe is now back in custody and facing the consequences of his alleged offences.

"I can confirm that Cabangani Mathe was deported from Malawi after he was found without any form of identification or documentation. Upon verification, it was established that he was a wanted person in Zimbabwe. He was arrested by members of the CID Homicide unit and has since appeared in court," said Comm Nyathi.

Police have not yet released further details regarding the specific charges he is facing, but authorities indicated that investigations are ongoing.
