Buhera South legislator Ngonidzashe Mudekunye has appeared before the Chimanimani Magistrates Court facing a charge of public violence following allegations that he assaulted a female security guard at Birchenough Bridge.

Mudekunye is accused of attacking Prettymore Kasiya, a security guard stationed at Birchenough Bridge, after she allegedly refused to allow a haulage truck to cross the bridge without first passing through the weighbridge.

The matter is being presided over by Magistrate Regis Mawarire.

According to court papers, the incident occurred on January 18 this year.

Mudekunye was granted bail and released from custody after paying US$100.

Prosecutor Hardlife Machando told the court that investigations into the case were still ongoing and the State was not yet ready to proceed to trial.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, Mudekunye allegedly escorted a haulage truck to Birchenough Bridge while driving his own vehicle.

He is accused of instructing Kasiya to allow the truck to cross the bridge without passing through the weighbridge to obtain the required documentation.

However, Kasiya allegedly refused to comply with the instruction, leading to a confrontation between the two.

During the altercation, Mudekunye allegedly assaulted the security guard.

Mudekunye's lawyer, Benjamin Bhasikiti, requested that the matter proceed by way of summons since the State indicated it was not ready to commence trial proceedings.

Magistrate Mawarire is expected to set the next hearing date as investigations continue.
